Blinking red light on battery charger when trying to charge battery

The cord to my battery charger broke so I bought a new battery charger. I tried to use it to charge my lithium ion 20 V battery. When I inserted the battery pack into the charger, the red light started blinking and would not stop. Does this mean that my battery is no good? or do I need to leave it blinking red overnight or until it starts blinking green and until a solid green light
